Day 25- R&R in Sukhothai

Planned an easy day today, for a change.  The hotel had bikes (and I use this term loosely)to use, so Jeri, Phil and I went our to the parking lot to choose a horse (Anne had a cold and decided to read and rest). After riding thoroughbreds most of my adult life,   these nags were a real come down.
I guess I’m just a cyling snob.  The bikes were all for children or the vertically challenged.  Our first order of business was to try to move the seat post up as much as possible.  Phil found a maintenance guy from the hotel and with primitive tools and a lot of elbow grease, we got three bikes’ seats up to their max.

We all still needed another 6-12” of leg extension.

I tried to convince Jeri to ride on the jump seat, but it wasn’t as comfortable as it looked.

Off we went toward the airport to check out the zoo and orchid farm.  As we neared the airport, we came upon the first of three temples.  It was a bit disconcerting.  Do you really have to pray that much to board a plane here?

There was also a wood carved replica of Angkor Wat adjacent to a swan pond in front of the terminal.

Just past the terminal was the beginning of the zoo.  There were giraffes and zebras (which we saw when we first arrived to Sukhothai), as well as ostriches, emus, an extensive monkey collection, and birds.

Just past the zoo was a huge orchid farm.  The farm was undercover to prevent the orchids from getting direct sunlight, and many of the orchids were growing with air roots only.  There are apparently several thousand different types of orchids (and I think they had them all, here!)  There was no one at the farm, and we had the run of it to ourselves.  We were tempted to pick a few, but resisted.

We hopped back on our rusty, I mean trusty, steeds for the long ride back (about a half a mile).  Back at the ranch, we spent the rest of the day lolling around the pool and drinking  (mostly juice, some beer).

Tomorrow we are back on the road to Koh Chang.
